Morningstar's Take

Pimco Emerging Markets Bond stands out thanks to a well-resourced team and a sophisticated investment process.

Morningstar has enhanced the way we assess alpha opportunity for funds, which is a key component in our Morningstar Medalist Rating calculation. More of this strategy's Medalist Ratings than usual may therefore change with this update even in the absence of changes to pillar ratings or fund costs.

The team's turnover has been high in recent years, but its strengths are enough to offset those concerns. Yacov Arnopolin joined Pimco in 2016 and took over this strategy in 2019 alongside comanager and Pimco veteran Javier Romo. Pramol Dhawan, Pimco's head of emerging-markets debt, is also closely involved in overseeing the strategy and has implemented a host of process enhancements in the roughly six years since he took over the team. Despite churn across the ranks, including 11 portfolio manager departures in the past three years (all of whom were replaced with experienced hires), the group remains larger and better resourced than most. Pimco's formidable credit, economist, and rates teams provide additional backing as well; the managers incorporate their research and investment ideas to good effect.

The strategy's approach draws upon Pimco's strong macroeconomic expertise and vast analytical resources. The team looks for bonds issued by countries it believes have the best mix of an improving economic outlook and policy flexibility. This fundamental approach is augmented by a diversified set of quant-driven strategies aimed at reducing trading costs and exploiting inefficiencies in the emerging-markets debt market. Strict limits on individual country positions aim to reduce single-name risk, and the team keeps a close watch on correlations between individual portfolio positions to minimize the portfolio’s overall sensitivity to market movements.

This structured approach, backed by significant technological and personnel resources, puts the strategy head and shoulders above most peers in the emerging-markets bond Morningstar Category. It has also resulted in an improved risk profile and top-quartile results since Arnopolin’s 2019 promotion to lead manager. All things considered, investors here are in very good hands.
