DWS Invest ESG Euro Bonds (Short) NC |

by Jeana Marie Doubell

We have qualitatively reviewed this strategy and reaffirmed its Above Average People and Process ratings. DWS Invest ESG Euro Bonds (Short) is led by experienced managers following a consistent but flexible investment approach. The following text is from Aug. 7, 2023. Portfolio manager Daniel Kittler was named lead portfolio manager here in 2019, following the retirement of previous long-term lead Claus Meyer-Cording. Kittler originally joined DWS in 2012 as a global short-term rates specialist and had collaborated with Meyer-Cording on developing trade ideas within the short-term bond space for several years, making him a natural fit to lead this strategy. He is supported by experienced deputy portfolio manager Carsten Weins, who was likewise named to the strategy in 2019. The duo are longtime collaborators, having comanaged DWS Invest Global Short Duration together since 2015. They are part of DWS's notably stable 13-person rates team, whose members average roughly two decades of firm tenure each. The managers seek to outperform their benchmark, the Markit iBoxx EUR Overall 1-3 Year Index through relative value plays across market segments, security selection and yield-curve positioning. In 2017, proprietary environmental, social and governance screenings were integrated into the process, but the framework had a limited impact on reducing the fund's investible universe and has not resulted in significant changes to the overall portfolio. While the managers largely stick to their benchmark's investment universe of sovereign, agency, corporate and covered bonds of eurozone issuers, they have the freedom to delve into riskier corners of the market such as emerging-markets debt (up to 20% of portfolio assets) or subordinated issues (up to 10%). Over the long term, this strategy has comfortably outperformed both its benchmark and its typical rival, landing in the top quartile of the euro diversified bond Morningstar Category over 10 and 15 years. Since Kittler took over as lead manager in June 2019 through June 2023, the strategy has likewise outperformed its benchmark and peer group on an absolute and risk-adjusted basis. |
