On April 12, Carmignac Gestion announced that Keith Ney has been added to the management team of the Carmignac Patrimoine strategy, alongside existing managers David Older and Rose Ouahba. Older and Ouahba will retain full responsibility over their respective equity and fixed-income sleeves. However, Ney will contribute to the general allocation framework of the fund, portfolio construction, and risk management. Older, Ouahba, and Ney will jointly decide on the macro overlay applied to the strategy, while the trio will also continue to leverage other members of the firm’s Strategic Committee (to which Ney has now been promoted). Ney brings a rich background in fixed income, having been a cornerstone of the credit research effort at Carmignac Gestion for several years before taking over Carmignac Sécurité (which carries a Morningstar Analyst Rating of Bronze) as lead manager in 2014. We have no immediate concerns on his ability to cooperate effectively with Older and Ouahba, but we will continue to watch the strategy to observe Ney’s specific contributions over the longer term. Our Morningstar Analyst Rating for Carmignac Patrimoine remains unchanged at this stage. |

Weakness in Carmignac Patrimoine A EUR Acc's Process and People Pillar ratings limits this strategy to a Morningstar Medalist Rating of Negative. Fees are a weakness here. The strategy's lofty fees are a high hurdle to clear, as it is priced within the second-highest quintile among peers.
The strategy earns a Below Average Process Pillar rating. Independent of the rating, analysis of the strategy's portfolio shows it has maintained a significant underweight position in the Japan region and an overweight in the healthcare sector compared with category peers. The strategy's management team completely turned over about a year ago, raising concerns. This and other weaknesses earn the strategy a Below Average People Pillar rating. The strategy's parent organization earns the firm an Average Parent Pillar rating, and this rating is inherited from vehicles belonging to the same branding entity and is indirectly assigned by an analyst. |
