BNP Paribas Russia Equity continues to benefit from one of the more experienced teams in the space and a well-structured approach focused on rigorous bottom-up research. The clean Privl Cap share class retains its Morningstar Analyst Rating of Bronze. Other share classes range from Silver to Neutral, dependent on fees.

The management of the strategy is outsourced to the TKB Investment Partners team, led by CIO Vladimir Tsuprov. The team has seen some turnover in the last few years, which is not ideal, but we believe it remains solid in terms of resources and experience. We also highly value lead manager Vladimir Tsuprov, who has led this strategy since 2007 and brings continuity to the team, alongside Gennady Sukhanov, Mikhail Nesterov and Andrey Saenko, who have all been at TKB for more than 10 years.

We like the thoroughness and depth of the research supporting this bottom-up approach. We also value the willingness of the team to continuously consider improvements to the process. For example, in 2019 the team added an ESG filter to their screening in the idea generation stage of their process, as well as incorporating ESG risk into the valuation models.

The process combines fundamental bottom-up research with controlled risk management regarding portfolio construction, which for this strategy is benchmark-aware, as at least 60% should be invested in benchmark names. Still, the team is willing to take relatively large bets both on a stock and sector level. As of 31 Aug 2021, active share was 40.3% and off-benchmark exposure was 24.2% of the portfolio.

Despite maintaining a relatively low active share, linked to the concentrated universe and Ucits constraints, the team has been able to put together a strong and consistent track record without becoming index huggers. Since Tsuprov took over the strategy in April 2007 through 31 July 2020, the oldest C retail share class has outperformed the average peer in the Russia equity category.
